Brimley-ish

Writer's Block: Pet central

Some animal rights activists are fighting to replace the term 'owner' with 'guardian' to convey a more balanced relationship between a person and her or his pet. Do you agree or disagree with the importance of this mission?

Using a different word will not change people's attitudes to pets. There will always be those who consider pets to be chattel and those who consider pets to be part of the family.

There is nothing balanced about a relationship with a pet. The "owner" or "guardian" must supply 100% of the pet's needs. Those needs extend beyond just food and water. Socialization, friendship, discipline, love, and health care are all necessary.

I cohabit with a Quaker Parakeet named Brimley and I am definitely not his "owner". Hubby and I have modified many aspects of our lives to accommodate him. he truly rules the roost.

I agree with you 100%. Changing the name from "owner" to "guardian" is not going to change people's attitudes. I don't currently have a pet, but I know my parents aren't "owners". Like you, they've had to modify aspects of their lives to accomodate the cats.
Those of us who don't see them as chattel tend to cohabitate rather than own. In our case, I think Brimley sees us as his slaves. He learned rather quickly that Daddy is more trainable than Mommy.
