Got a phone call update from my hubby. His mother is in very good spirits. (I think the drugs help.) We finally got the story.

Helen went to the bathroom about 3am. Thankfully, she had already relieved herself when bad things happened. The most likely scenario is that she fell as a result of her hip breaking. (She had cracked it a couple of years ago.) Her right hip is broken in three places and her left arm is broken in three places. She crawled to the phone in the hallway. In trying to pull it down from the shelf, she dislodged the plug. She could not reach to plug it back in. The next-door neighbour noticed her curtains were not open and found her on the floor when she came to investigate at about 1pm. Helen was conscious and lucid during those ten hours.

At the hospital, the doctors gave her a temporary cast for her arm so she could have an emergency hip replacement. They will put on a new cast tomorrow. She lives alone and will have to go through a fair amount of rehabilitation so they are putting her into an extended care facility that is part of the hospital until she can function on her own again.

Hubby is coming back home later this week.

I'm sorry your poor mother-in-law had to go through such a horrible experience. I felt so sorry for her when I read that she was lying there for about 12 hours before her neighbour arrived to check on her. It's a good thing the neighbour is so observant and conscientious and the wait wasn't a day or two instead.

I'm glad your mother-in-law was in good spirits despite her ordeal. It's great that she'll be able to stay in an extended care facility during her rehabilation.
Thanks. I think she'll be fine. She's getting the help she needs.
