Despair

Mothers!!!!!!

Last week, we lost my mother for a while. That was resolved in a previous post.

Last night, hubby got a phone call from his aunt. His mother (my mother-in-law, Helen) got up in the night to use the washroom and fell. She broke her left hip and her left arm in a couple of places. She also landed behind the bathroom door so she couldn't get to the phone. The next door neighbour saw that the curtains weren't open when she came home from work Sunday afternoon so got the spare key and went investigating. She found Helen about twelve hours after the fall and called an ambulance. At 8pm last night, Helen was in surgery. Hubby caught a few hours sleep then got up at 2am to drive there. I've asked him to call me every afternoon to keep me informed. I have no additional news, but he could be there for quite a while because she will need constant care for at least six weeks after she gets out of hospital.

Some Happy News

After much work to find the best deal, I have booked a trip with my sister and mother. My other sister was going to come with us, but she couldn't find her passport. Traveling with lazigyrl was an option too, but being the third person in the cabin is about $500 cheaper than the cheapest cabin. We won't be letting my mom fly alone on this trip so she shouldn't get lost.

The trip is a "Rail and Sail" next September. We fly from New York City to Madrid (for a couple of days). Take the high speed train to Barcelona where we get on a ship to visit Monaco, Livorno, Rome (Civitavecchia), Naples, Messina, Mallorca, Marseilles, and back to Barcelona, then fly back to New York. We still have to make our way to and from New York.

Mom and I are hoping we don't end up with any major earthquakes, hurricane winds, or lost luggage like on our trip to South America. We are also very hopeful that Mount Vesuvius and Mount Etna are quiet while we're there.

Mother-in-law

Got a phone call update from my hubby. His mother is in very good spirits. (I think the drugs help.) We finally got the story.

Helen went to the bathroom about 3am. Thankfully, she had already relieved herself when bad things happened. The most likely scenario is that she fell as a result of her hip breaking. (She had cracked it a couple of years ago.) Her right hip is broken in three places and her left arm is broken in three places. She crawled to the phone in the hallway. In trying to pull it down from the shelf, she dislodged the plug. She could not reach to plug it back in. The next-door neighbour noticed her curtains were not open and found her on the floor when she came to investigate at about 1pm. Helen was conscious and lucid during those ten hours.

At the hospital, the doctors gave her a temporary cast for her arm so she could have an emergency hip replacement. They will put on a new cast tomorrow. She lives alone and will have to go through a fair amount of rehabilitation so they are putting her into an extended care facility that is part of the hospital until she can function on her own again.

Hubby is coming back home later this week.
