Unexpected Plot Twists - or - Say It Ain't So

The secondary character I adore has just hinted that he had his wife and sons assassinated. He hasn't come right out and said anything; but it is obvious to me that he plans to put his daughter on the throne. Argh! I never expected him to be so ruthless.

Ooooooh! Well, I often find villains more interesting than heroes because of their flaws, though I prefer an antagonist with shades of grey as opposed to someone who is just evil for the sake of being evil. Maybe your character had a very good reason for wanting to put his daughter on the throne. Maybe it was for the greater good? And when I say "greater good," I don't necessarily mean his own. *g*
My secondary character is not evil. He is merely ambitious. His sons were not his biological children, so he didn't want them on the throne despite local laws that consider the parent who does the raising rather than the biological parent to be the child's legal parent. His daughter is his own flesh and blood (and much better suited to rule.)
I can imagine your secondary character would feel a bit uncomfortable should he be aware that you promulgate his culpability in this manner.
*cough*
Thankfully, he is not aware. Only his namesake and the rest of the world are aware.

He is quite ambitious. His sons were not his biological sons, nor were they well-suited (or suited at all) to ruling a country. His daughter, who is his biological daughter (surprise), is extremely well-suited to rule. He has the country's best interests at heart.
Shocking!
Yes, I was so shocked, I had to stop writing for an hour just to wrap my head around it. It seems he has the country's best interests in mind because his daughter will be a much better ruler.
